The Top 10 Vehicles for Towing Pt. 1

It’s all well and good to have the trailer ready to go but if your car’s no good at towing, regardless of the quality of towbar you’ve got, you’re not going to get very far at all. There’s absolutely hundreds of thousands of cars available in Sydney but not every one of them will be suited for towing. Check out Part 1 of our Top 10 list to find out what car you should get to hitch your caravan or trailer up to in order to get out of the city this summer:

1. Subaru Forester 2.0D
With a maximum trailer weight of 1,600kg there’s not much that you won’t be able to tow in this baby. The Subaru Forester 2.0 litre turbo diesel comes with constant all-wheel drive, self-levelling rear suspension and a hill holder that’s capable of working in both drive and reverse. If you’re wanting something with a little more room and with a little more towing power, have a look at the Outback model.

2. Suzuki Grand Vitara DDIS
This is your standard 4WD, but far more compact than the beasts that clog up Sydney’s CBD. It comes with low-range gearing, locking centre diff and a steel frame chassis with a 1.9 litre turbo diesel engine. This beauty can tow up to 2,000kg and loves to get out on rough off-road trails.

3. Land Rover Freelander2 TD4
The name Land Rover pretty much says it all when it comes to 4WD but there’s a little more to this tower than just a love of off-road travel. Hill descent control, adjustable traction control for a variety of conditions and a 2.2 litre turbo diesel means this beast can tow up to 2,000kg and you won’t even notice the difference.

4. Ford Falcon
The classic Australian working man’s car and it’s a sweet tower too. If you’re looking at towing, choose either the sedan or ute models, which can tow up to 2,300kg. Towing so much can eat up a lot of petrol so be prepared to pay for that 4.0 litre petrol six when you hitch that caravan up.

5. Mitsubishi Pajero
If you’ve got plenty of gear to bring along or just plenty of people than the Mitsubishi Pajero is the towing car for you. Boasting seven seats, this hard-worker will pull up to 3,000kg depending on your towball download. Not only that your 3.2 litre four works in both 2WD or 4WD, high or low range and has optional diff lock.

If you can’t find the car for you in that list then next week we’ll be bringing part two to you. In the meantime why not bone up on your towbar knowledge and have a read of What to Look Out for When Buying a Towbar?
